The Berlin-based DJ and producer Daniel Haaksman will deliver his fourth album Sonido Lava in spring 2023. In the meantime, here’s “Magma”, a club-ready funky, bossa nova fusion.
Like the runny lava and hovering dark cloud after a volcanic eruption, Daniel Haaksman’s “Magma” hits you in layers. You’ll first hear these dramatic, intense string stabs over a menacing UK funk rhythm, urging you to run away from the boiling menace. After the chaos, a false sense of peace and quiet settles in the form of a wavy, colorful bossa-nova breakdown. But before you can even catch your breath, you now have to take cover, as the rain of dust chokes you and the basalt traps you in and the bassy, ominous tune starts again. The accompanying music video, directed by Polish artist Kinga Kielczynska, showcases nature’s strength and all-consuming power, but also gives a glimpse of hope. “We’re living in magma times, gliding on a fluid ground to uncertainty, not knowing whether our future will be hellish or if mankind still manages to let reason reign. Maybe it’s also likely that on the cooled parts of the former magma, fruitful ground will emerge, giving life to new hopes and possibilities. After all, magma is deep underneath all our feet.”
Berlin-based DJ, producer and founder of Man Recording label Daniel Haaksman takes inspiration from the foreign landscapes of South America. Blending kuduro, house, trap, and Brazilian sounds, he was one of the first to introduce the uninitiated crowds of Europe to baile funk with his 2004 compilation Rio Baile Funk Favela Booty Beats. Eighteen years and many projects later, he’s now exploring them through the theme of volcanoes in the upcoming album Sonido Lava, translating to “sounds of lava”. The first single, “La Mujer Dormida” featuring Malagüera, was inspired by the Mexican volcano Iztaccíhuatl, whose form resembles a sleeping woman: a “mujer dormida”. The lyrics also cover Chilean poet Gabriela Mistral’ ode to “Volcán Osorno”. Admiring the dangerous beauty of this fascinating phenomenon, Sonido Lava transports us to unexplored paths, up the flame mountains.
